His mother came from Lunari. His father ruled Diamora. Vain inherited the blood of both and the recognition of neither. The king never claimed him, so he grew up across the border, raised by the one person who never asked him to be less than he was. He called her his grandmother, and she was the first to look at him and see something more.
Each PUFF holds abilities of its own, the powers it uses to stay out of reach of the people hunting it.
Hidden among the markets of Lunari were jackets unlike anything the Outcasts had seen. Forged by a Blacksmith nobody could name, each one held an ability that stayed asleep until the right person put it on.
Every other Outcast borrows their gift from the jacket on their back. Vain’s was already there before he found his: the one thing his father’s line ever gave him, and the one thing it could not take back.
He sees backwards. Through people, places and the things they leave behind, Vain reads memories, buried truths and the events someone went to real trouble to hide. Where his half-brother O.G. reads the future, Vain reads what already happened. The past keeps better records.

He was not the only one. Both worlds had their share of people who had been misread, overlooked or quietly written off, and Vain went looking for them. What he built was the thing neither Lunari nor Diamora had ever offered him: somewhere to belong without first agreeing to be someone else.

Vain is for anyone who has ever been the wrong fit in the room. He is proof that the part of you that does not match was never the weakness. It was where the power came from.
